Jane McAteer was a shrewd woman. Following the death of her husband John in 1917, she managed to sell the former stable portion of the hotel to a theatre development company. Using the returns from that sale, she turned the hotel into a series of street level shops and created three separate apartments on the upper floors. The revenues from the rental properties eventually allowed her to purchase a fine house at 1 Waterloo Avenue with her daughters.
